Luna Cat Cafe is Syracuse's first Japanese cat cafe and restaurant, combining authentic Japanese cuisine with a traditional Japanese-style cat lounge in a unique dual-experience venue. The dream to combine sit-down restaurant service with a Japanese cat cafe began in 2010, with development launching in 2018 and the cafe ultimately opening August 28, 2021, following events, challenges, and COVID delays. The facility serves authentic Japanese specialties and pride themselves on an extensive bubble tea variety along with custom Moon Blend Coffee. The menu features an eclectic mix of Midwestern and Japanese cuisine, earning recent recognition as one of Syracuse's best Japanese restaurants on Restaurantji. The cafe positions itself as a second home where visitors can grab and go, stay for extended periods, work or study, or enjoy books in a calm, relaxing atmosphere designed for all ages and backgrounds.
All adoptable cats come from the
CNY Cat Coalition, a 100% volunteer-run animal rescue operating a foster home network founded in 2003 that has found homes for over 650 cats while providing low-cost spay/neuter services to address cat overpopulation. The cat room is spacious with abundant cat trees, toys, and enrichment allowing cats to choose participation levels. The venue recently expanded and opened the Boba-Cade, a new cafe section featuring arcade machines where guests enjoy bubble tea while playing classic games. Unlimited cat room hour options and bottomless drink packages provide value for extended visits. The cat room is completely separate from the dining area, accommodating non-cat visitors and those with allergies who prefer meal enjoyment without animal interaction.
Reviewers praise the huge, well-maintained cat room with excellent enrichment and cat-choice accommodation. Visitors note the cats appear energetic, healthy, and well-cared-for, with staff demonstrating genuine knowledge about animal welfare. The authentic Japanese food receives consistent high marks with specific praise for excellent ramen, beef rice bowls, strawberry sandos, and creative beverages like pumpkin spice bubble tea and s'mores hot chocolate. The service is described as lovely and attentive, with staff going above and beyond to assist guests. The space is described as charming, cozy, and cute with a uniquely niche concept for Syracuse. The combination of authentic Japanese restaurant quality, creative bubble teas, functional arcade games, a spacious and well-maintained cat room, friendly staff, and adoption opportunities creates a distinctive destination appealing to cat lovers, food enthusiasts, and those seeking unique community spaces. The facility's commitment to adopting cats from local rescue partners aligns meal enjoyment with animal welfare support.
