Kumiko Cat Lounge is a distinctly thoughtful rescue-led space founded by Karen, whose background combines her veterinary family heritage (her father was President of the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons) with twenty years of public health and mental wellbeing work. In partnership with Belfast Kitten Rescue, Kumiko operates as a calm transition space where rescued, neutered, vaccinated cats prepare for adoption while visitors experience the restorative benefits of their company. The philosophy is deceptively simple: when cats feel safe and cared for, people feel the difference. Sessions are intentionally small and unhurried, creating an atmosphere where both felines and guests can truly settle. All cats are given freedom to choose whether and how they interact—no picking up, chasing, or waking sleeping cats allowed.
The lounge rejects traditional cafe seating in favor of sofas, cushions, and bench seats scattered throughout a beautifully designed space with high perches, cosy retreats, and plenty of natural light. Visitors describe it as "far more like visiting the cats at home and having a cuddle" than a typical cafe, and reviewers consistently praise the "super calm and relaxing environment," the "soft and friendly" rescue cats, and the "fabulous, friendly" human staff—called "Cat Butlers" who help read feline cues. The space is rated 5 out of 5 by the Food Standards Agency. The seven simple house rules create a consensual, cat-approved atmosphere that visitors respect and embrace.
Open Monday, Wednesday–Sunday 11am–5pm (closed Tuesday). Sessions are £12 per person; book in advance. Located on Upper Newtownards Road, the lounge offers simple drinks and snacks (£1–£3): coffees, teas, cold drinks, focaccia, and sweet treats. If you meet a cat during your visit and feel a connection, adoption inquiries are welcome. Call 02890 135 272 or email kumikocatlounge@gmail.com.
