The Purrfect Bean is Richmond's first dedicated cat cafe, founded by Michelle Langham—a passionate animal welfare advocate with a background in business management who relocated to the Richmond area from Northern Virginia in 2022. Langham and her spouse moved with the intention to rescue farm animals, and have since rescued five donkeys, nine chickens, two dogs, and five cats on their property. After experiencing cat cafes in Northern Virginia and Washington DC, Langham recognized Richmond's lack of such a space and founded The Purrfect Bean with explicit values of love, kindness, compassion, and community. The cafe operates on the ground floor as a fully vegan café where visitors can order lattes, teas, and food before heading upstairs to the Cat Lounge. The founder's deep commitment to animal welfare extends to every product—all food and beverages are entirely vegan, reflecting the philosophy that animal welfare should permeate every aspect of the space. Alternatively, visitors can visit the café alone for coffee and refreshments without accessing the cat lounge.
The Cat Lounge experience at The Purrfect Bean costs $20 on weekdays and $25 on weekends for a 50-minute visit, with reservations strongly recommended to secure a spot. The cats are all adoptable through
Purring Hearts VA, a 100% volunteer-run foster-based rescue affiliated with Lionhearts, Inc. and the Kincheloe Clinic in Fredericksburg and Ashland, Virginia. Purring Hearts prioritizes rescuing vulnerable cats and works with Richmond area shelters to pull animals in danger of euthanasia or those who would suffer in shelter environments. All cats in The Purrfect Bean are fully adoptable, allowing visitors to spend meaningful time evaluating compatibility before committing to adoption. Children under four are not permitted; anyone under 18 must be accompanied by an adult.
Visitors to The Purrfect Bean consistently praise the friendly staff, delicious vegan coffee and beverages, adorable kittens and cats, cute decor, cleanliness, and orderly environment. The experience is described as relaxing, fun, and perfect for coffee dates, potential adoption exploration, or simply spending quality time with felines. The staff demonstrates genuine care for the cats and handles reservation issues wonderfully via email communications. Early morning slots are recommended as the first session of the day when cats are most energetic and playful. The space represents Richmond's first opportunity for residents to experience cat cafe culture while supporting a rescue organization committed to saving vulnerable lives. By combining excellent vegan food and coffee with accessible cat interaction, The Purrfect Bean demonstrates that café culture and animal welfare can align perfectly.
