The Brooklyn Cat Cafe stands as New York City's first cat café in its most populous borough and the only nonprofit-operated cat café in the city. Operated by Brooklyn Bridge Animal Welfare Coalition
(BBAWC), a woman-run volunteer-driven nonprofit founded in 2007, the café represents the organization's evolution toward creating a community hub for rescue work. The space has expanded to multiple floors, now featuring separate rooms for shy cats, a dedicated kitten room, and a feline leukemia room. At any given time, at least 35 cats—all rescues and available for adoption—inhabit the café. The main floor can accommodate general visitors, while the second floor provides quieter environments for cats with different needs and temperaments.
BBAWC's impact extends far beyond the café's walls. Since 2007, the organization has rescued over 7,000 cats and more than 100 other animals, placing over 6,000 in permanent homes and TNRing (trap-neuter-return) over 1,000 community cats. The organization launched its Rescue Clinic in 2020, providing high-quality, low-cost veterinary services and spay/neuter surgeries to rescuers and low-income pet owners—to date completing over 4,200 procedures. The café serves as the physical manifestation of this mission, welcoming over 120,000 visitors during normal years and housing approximately 200 cats in foster homes. The space functions as both adoption venue and resource center, offering educational workshops for rescuers and temporary housing for newly rescued animals.
Beyond standard visits, Brooklyn Cat Cafe offers unique experiences: yoga with rescue cats ($28), movie nights with feline critics ($30),
private event spaces starting at $350, and signature sleepovers ($1,600 for all-night experiences and $650 for extended sleep-unders). Saturday Cat Camp ($50 for 2-hour drop-in sessions) introduces children ages 7–10 to cat care through themed activities and grooming opportunities. Reviews emphasize the cats' visible relaxation—slow blinking, exposed bellies, and contentment suggest genuinely low-stress environments. Visitors notice staff enthusiasm for each cat's individual personality and the clear welfare-first philosophy. The organization's demonstrated expertise in rescue, veterinary care, and community education creates trust that cats receive exceptional treatment, whether in the public café or through the robust foster network.
