River Kitty Cat Cafe is a nonprofit program of the
Vanderburgh Humane Society, established in November 2019 after VHS purchased the original cafe from founders Annette Gries and Nancy Drake. Every dollar spent at River Kitty—whether on lounge fees or cafe purchases—directly supports the Vanderburgh Humane Society's mission of caring for homeless animals in the community. The cafe operates with a small but intentional capacity of 10 patrons at a time, ensuring a calm, manageable environment for both human guests and cat residents. The space houses approximately 20 cats at any given time, all up for adoption through the Vanderburgh Humane Society. When a cat finds a home, another is brought from the shelter, creating a rotating adoption hub that expands capacity at the shelter while increasing the number of lives saved. Reservations are highly recommended to guarantee entry time, as walk-ins may encounter waits during popular hours.
The River Kitty beverage and food menu reflects exceptional creativity and thoughtfulness, with coffee drinks featuring playful feline-inspired names (Bobtail Brew, Adopticano, Catuccino, Lazy Cat Latte, Meowcchiato, Razzleberry Mocha, Maple Butter Mouser, Purr Over, Frisky French Press, Turkish Tabby, Vietnamese Vibrissae, Hot Chococat). Homemade smoothies offer creative flavor combinations tailored to cat lovers: Calico Cream (milk, chocolate, banana, strawberries, peanut butter), Cuddle Cup (chocolate, peanut butter, banana, coffee), Orange & White Delight, The Fat Cat, Cheshire Cat Smile (raspberries, banana), and The Pink Panther (strawberries, banana). The cafe serves Rishi Tea in multiple formats (iced, sachet, loose leaf), coke products, water, beer, and wine. The most distinctive menu item is the macaron selection from
Julie's Just Desserts, featuring an astounding array of flavors. Additional treats include banana or blueberry muffins and Reese's Cup brownies.
Visitors describe River Kitty Cat Cafe as a joyful serotonin fix combining therapeutic cat interaction with excellent beverages and food. The staff are consistently praised as super friendly, knowledgeable, and genuinely engaged with visitors and the adoption process. The cats are described as happy, playful, calm, and eager to approach visitors—each with a unique name and distinct personality. The lounge experience at $10 for up to an hour offers exceptional value for therapeutic animal interaction. The merchandise available (cute items to support the cause) and the opportunity to engage in meaningful conversation with like-minded animal lovers adds to the experience. Whether visiting simply to enjoy macarons and cat-watching from cafe tables or paying for lounge access to interact directly, River Kitty Cat Cafe successfully creates a gathering place where community, animal rescue, and exceptional food and beverage service converge—transforming every visit and every purchase into meaningful support for homeless animals in the community.
