Pause Cat Café is the South's first cat cafe, born from founder's life-changing experience with a timid rescue cat named Rooney. The cafe operates on four core values: for the cats (safe, happy home); for you (happiness and unique experience); for the community (addressing loneliness, poverty, disability through projects and work placements); and for the environment (fully plant-based menu, ethical practices). Unlike many cat cafes, Pause's residents are permanent—not available for adoption. The cats form a colony family unit; animal behaviorists advised that rehoming would stress the group, making it better to provide excellent permanent homes for a smaller feline family. Entry is exceptionally affordable at just £5 per person (non-profit cat care charge), supporting veterinary care, food, and enrichment. The cafe showcases locally sourced, sustainable, healthy, and entirely plant-based artisan food.
Reviewers highlight the genuinely relaxed, happy cats—most contentedly sleeping rather than stressed by crowds. Staff are described as lovely, friendly, and knowledgeable about each cat's story. The plant-based menu receives consistent praise: vegan options like chocolate brownies with soya ice cream, gluten-free choices, and creative dishes are described as "amazing." Food is served in small boxes to protect it from curious cats. The cafe's emphasis on ethical eating, animal welfare, and community projects creates an atmosphere where visitors feel they're "doing good" while relaxing.
Located on Old Christchurch Road in Bournemouth, Pause offers a peaceful retreat with table seating throughout (note: some downstairs tables not suitable for elderly or disabled guests; upstairs toilet also has limited accessibility). Children under 13 must book specific child-friendly tables (Tables 9 & 10); under 16s need adult supervision. Bookings are essential. Call 01202 240194 for more information. The cafe accepts donations and operates a volunteer program. Follow on social media for "kitty capers" and updates.
