About Otis & Clementine’s Books
Nestled in the charming coastal community of Upper Tantallon, Nova Scotia, Otis & Clementine's Books combines a carefully curated used bookstore with specialty coffee and a mission-driven adoption program. Since establishing their adoption partnership in 2019 with Spay Day HRM in Bedford, this woman-owned business has found forever homes for over 300 rescue cats. The cafe functions as a rotating adoption showcase where adoptable kittens and cats arrive on a rolling basis through their partner rescue, creating an ever-changing feline family. The bookstore itself showcases 13,500 well-curated recent bestsellers in excellent condition, complemented by Spanish language classes, mah jong games, and a monthly Spanish book club. Their tagline—"books. coffee. cats. oh yeah."—perfectly captures the unique blend of offerings that draws visitors from across the region and beyond, even attracting attention from media outlets like Bored Panda and CBC News.
The cats at Otis & Clementine's roam freely throughout the lounge, encouraging natural interactions and genuine connection-building with visitors. The resident cat, Seamus, is always present and eager to make new friends, while adoptable cats create opportunities for guests to experience potential family matches before committing. Reviewers consistently highlighted the cafe's exceptional cleanliness and organization, with one noting that despite welcoming cats, the space maintains such high standards that even family members with cat allergies experience no issues. The staff are praised for their genuine warmth and community-mindedness, with visitors describing the experience as "cozy and cute" and appreciating Ellen's personalized attention and local recommendations. The environment naturally balances comfort and socialization, making it an ideal spot for book browsing, coffee sipping, and quiet time with cats. Visitors are asked to watch their children and feet as cats roam freely, ensuring their autonomy and comfort while maintaining safety.
The cafe is located at 5209 St. Margaret's Bay Road in Upper Tantallon, conveniently positioned for those traveling to nearby Peggy's Cove or exploring the coastal area. Operating hours are Monday, Wednesday, and Thursday 10am–5pm; Tuesday and Friday 10:30am–5pm; Saturday 10am–5pm; and Sunday 12pm–5pm. They serve coffee, teas, hot chocolate, and cold drinks prepared fresh in-house alongside their bookstore offerings. Adoptable cats arrive unpredictably, so if your visit centers on meeting cats available for adoption, calling ahead at (902) 826-1823 is recommended. The adoption process through Spay Day HRM includes a $300 adoption fee for adult cats and $350 for kittens under one year, with all cats arriving spayed/neutered, vaccinated, treated for parasites, and vet-checked. You can contact them via email at ellen@otisbooks.ca or through their social media (@otisbooks on Instagram and Facebook) to learn about current adoptable cats and upcoming Spanish classes or community events.
