Meowter Banks Cat Cafe

Meowter Banks Cat Cafe is the Outer Banks' first and only cat cafe, a veteran-owned and woman-owned small business founded by Brandi-Marie after a 22-year U.S. Coast Guard career and nearly 18 months as a cat care technician at the OBX SPCA. The cafe was born from a mission she heard repeatedly: people felt guilty they hadn't come sooner to meet adoptable cats. She envisioned a place where cats could have greater community presence, where people could meet them in a calm, welcoming space, and where education could challenge stereotypes about feline nature—revealing cats as smart, social, cuddly, independent, and so much more.

The space is designed to give adoptable cats plenty of playtime, love, and socialization while visitors enjoy amazing locally baked pastries, treats, and specialty drinks in a purrfect little haven. Every cat here is up for adoption, ready to find their perfect match. A key philosophy sets Meowter Banks apart: cats don't rotate back to shelters. Once a cat arrives, the cafe is their transition home until adoption. Going back and forth can be stressful and confusing; the cafe provides consistent, safe, supportive care. Meowter Banks fosters adoptable cats from OBX SPCA, Currituck Animal Shelter, and Brenda Barks Rescue, while collaborating with local small businesses whenever possible.

Visits cost $18 per hour and are bookable online, though walk-ins are welcome on a first-come, first-serve basis if space allows (calling ahead is highly recommended). The cafe is family-run with husband John, daughter Eva, and loyal team member Shannon creating an exceptionally welcoming atmosphere. Coffee is excellent, the cat lounge is full of playful, friendly foster kitties, and everything is meticulously clean. Staff are genuinely invested in both the cats and visitors. The Meowtel also offers cat boarding for those looking for a cozy, safe place for their own cats while traveling.
