Mac Tabby Cat Cafe is Charlotte's first cat cafe, born from founder Lori's 40-year passion for cats and her husband Nick's pivotal question: "If you took all logistics out of it, what would you do?" The answer transformed into a movement supporting feline rescue while building a business legacy to inspire their three sons. The original location opened December 16, 2017, and relocated to the heart of NoDa (Charlotte's Arts and Entertainment District) on February 2, 2019. The second-floor venue in a historic building features original wood floors, exposed brick walls, local art, and cozy beanbag corners creating a lofty, uniquely charming atmosphere. The space divides into separate cafe and cat lounge areas, allowing guests to enjoy either side independently or both together. The cafe serves coffee, wine, craft beer, smoothies, and baked goods while the cat lounge houses twelve adorable adoptable cats ages seven and older during regular business hours. Reservations are encouraged for lounge access to ensure optimal cat welfare and visitor experience, though walk-ins are accommodated when available.
The original rescue partnership with
Catering to Cats and Dogs resulted in over 650 cats adopted together during their four-year collaboration. Mac Tabby later transitioned to partnership with
Princeton's Meow, the Humane Society of Concord's cage-free cat adoption facility dedicated to saving cats and kittens from unnecessary euthanasia in kill shelters throughout North Carolina and South Carolina. The organization has achieved remarkable milestones including 1,000 cats adopted by August 23, 2022, and 2,000 total adoptions by May 28, 2025. NoDa's surrounding neighborhood offers eclectic galleries, unique shops, jewelry stores, tattoo parlors, restaurants, and music venues creating a vibrant arts and entertainment destination.
Reviewers consistently praise the sweet, playful, well-behaved cats and knowledgeable, passionate staff. The space is described as cute, well-kept, cozy, and perfect for both photography and relaxed cat interaction. Visitors appreciate the reasonable pricing ($14 per hour) and quality beverages. The atmosphere is noted as calm and non-overwhelming for neurodivergent guests, with non-judgmental staff and multiple interaction options (solo or group). Cats are described as friendly, well-cared-for, and able to retreat when needed while frequently approaching visitors for attention. The combination of affordable admission, dedicated rescue partnerships, skilled staff, and genuinely happy cats creates a beloved Charlotte destination supporting meaningful animal welfare work.
