Kitty Cat Lounge is a Lakeland, Florida sanctuary created by photojournalist-turned-activist Cindy Skop with a powerful mission: combat the 66,000+ cats euthanized annually due to lack of homes. After years covering neglected communities and uncared-for souls, she knew she had to take action. She and her family "sunk everything we have and a lot more that we don't have" to create this cozy, welcoming space where cats transition from shelter cages to home-like settings where they can relax, be socialized, and showcase their true personalities to potential adopters.
The space is designed like visiting a beloved grandma's house, filled with charming 1950s-60s furniture and an adorable, accepting energy that welcomes all. Kitty Cat Lounge partners with
Saving Paws Rescue of Florida—a 501(c)3 nonprofit dedicated to rescuing cats and dogs abandoned, abused, or neglected in Polk County—serving as a foster home where kitties are socialized while awaiting their permanent families. The cafe sources all snacks, drinks, and coffee from local small businesses, keeping dollars in the community. Prices are very affordable and reasonable, making quality cat time accessible to everyone.
The experience extends beyond the cat lounge: you can enjoy breakfast, bagel sandwiches (the cheese bagel is highly recommended), hot chocolate, coffee, or simply relax with free WiFi, games, TV, or a book.
Birthday parties and special events are hosted here with amazing staff and the warmly welcoming owner, Cindy, who's always actively involved. The cafe also operates community pantries out front. If you fall in love with a kitty, simply ask for an adoption application. Volunteering opportunities are available both at Kitty Cat Lounge and with Saving Paws Rescue. Regular visitors speak of celebrating adoptions and mourning departures—a community genuinely invested in feline welfare.
