KitTea Cat Lounge is San Francisco's first cat lounge, founded in 2014 in Hayes Valley as a sanctuary for both humans and cats. Located in the Mission District in a sunlit space, KitTea was created with an intentional philosophy: to operate slower, softer, and with far more whiskers than conventional rescue models. The cafe serves artisan teas alongside the cat experience, with every visit generating direct support for the rescue, medical care, and rehoming of at-risk cats from underfunded shelters across the Bay Area and Central Valley. KitTea specializes in rescuing cats most likely to be overlooked in traditional shelter settings: senior cats, bonded pairs, shy souls, and those with special needs. The lounge itself is designed as a cozy, joyful community space where visitors can unwind while supporting a meaningful adoption mission.

The KitTea experience emphasizes mindfulness and accessibility. The cat lounge is a shoe-free sanctuary where visitors wear socks, shoe covers, or indoor-only shoes to protect both cleanliness and cat comfort. Guests are welcome to bring outside food and beverages (nothing alcoholic), and the space accommodates small groups of up to seven humans per booking with a maximum capacity of 14 humans per session. Each visitor must purchase their own ticket at $18 for 30 minutes. Pricing includes tea service, allowing visitors to sip artisan beverages while interacting with the adoptable cats. The space is designed for visitors to pet, play, inquire about adoption, or simply "zen out" in a low-sensory environment that appeals strongly to introverts and those seeking mental health breaks. KitTea has become a favorite destination for a diverse range of occasions: first dates, birthday celebrations, grief recovery, and quiet moments of connection.
