Hunter's Kitten Lounge is a non-profit cat lounge operated by
Southern Arizona Cat Rescue (SACR) and located at 5319 E Speedway Boulevard in Tucson, Arizona. The space is dedicated to the memory of Hunter, a special-needs cat who inspired the organization's founding and mission. Hunter's story—from rescue at six weeks old with a severe infection to a life filled with joy, friendship, and purpose—embodies SACR's philosophy that every cat, regardless of health challenges, deserves a chance at their best life. The lounge itself provides a cozy, home-like environment where visitors can study, work, or simply relax with 20-30 adoptable cats and kittens of varying ages and personalities. Eighty minutes of cat companionship costs $15, and the space is equipped with cards, books, and board games for visitor entertainment.
All cats housed at Hunter's Kitten Lounge meet rigorous health standards set by SACR. Every resident is spayed or neutered, vaccinated for FRCP and rabies, dewormed, and tested negative for feline leukemia virus (FeLV). Feline immunodeficiency virus (FIV) positive cats may reside in the lounge provided they do not display aggressive behavior. Cats must be at least three months old to free roam in the space—younger kittens cannot yet receive rabies vaccinations and are too small for the environment. Since SACR's inception in October 2019, the organization has adopted out approximately 600 cats annually, with a particular focus on neonatal kittens and mother cats. The opening of Hunter's Kitten Lounge expanded SACR's capacity to rescue and place cats across all age groups, from kittens through senior felines.
The lounge's community-focused design accommodates diverse visitor needs and occasions. SACR welcomes gatherings and
private events including team bonding, book clubs, game nights, and birthday parties for groups (with the exception of children under 15, as the cats require a calmer environment). The staff demonstrates exceptional knowledge about each feline resident and their individual needs, making informed recommendations for potential adopters. Visitors consistently praise the clean, well-organized space, friendly and helpful volunteers, and the opportunity to interact meaningfully with cats before making adoption decisions. Hunter's Kitten Lounge represents a living tribute to one remarkable cat's legacy—transforming a life of medical challenges into an ongoing mission to give hundreds of other cats their own best lives.
