About Familiar Cat Café
Familiar Cat Café, located at 935 6th Ave in Marion, Iowa, marks Linn County's first dedicated cat cafe—a sanctuary centered on "cats, coffee & cosmic vibes" that brings together belonging, community, and wellness. Established with a mission to facilitate adoptions and reduce shelter overcrowding, Familiar partners with Funky Paws Animal Rescue of Buchanan County to house adoptable cats in its welcoming space. The cafe's holistic approach extends beyond feline companionship: visitors can enjoy thoughtfully prepared coffee and bakery treats, browse and support local artists and makers whose work is featured on consignment, and participate in private event rentals. The result is a multi-purpose gathering space that honors both human connection and the urgency of rescue cat placement.
The Mew-ion Lounge provides an intimate setting where visitors can decompress with adoptable cats in a carefully managed environment. With a 10-person-per-hour capacity, the space avoids overwhelming crowds and maintains a calm atmosphere where cats and humans can genuinely connect. Staff enforce clear house rules to prioritize feline wellbeing and visitor safety, and all guests complete a liability waiver prior to entry. Children ages 12 and under must be accompanied by a parent or guardian (children 5 and under are free), ensuring family-friendly visits with appropriate supervision. Reviewers consistently praise the welcoming, bright service and inviting atmosphere, with visitors noting the cafe as an ideal spot to destress, enjoy quality coffee and bakery items, and spend meaningful time with the cats. The space is available for private parties and gatherings, making it a versatile community venue.
Operating Wednesday–Thursday 11am–6pm, Friday–Saturday 10am–7pm, and Sunday 10am–4pm (closed Monday–Tuesday), Familiar Cat Café offers flexible visit options: $5 for 15 minutes, $10 for 30 minutes, or $15 for 60 minutes (sales tax and 3% convenience fee added at checkout). Sixty-minute sessions require online reservation; 15- and 30-minute visits are walk-in only, first-come-first-served. Free street parking is available around the entire block; accessible ADA parking with back-lot entrance is available for those requiring assistance (use caution opening the back door to prevent cats from escaping). The adoption process is thorough: interested adopters complete a detailed application reviewed on Thursdays, submit to veterinary and background checks, participate in interviews and potential home visits, and pay a $150 adoption fee per cat upon pickup. Contact Familiar at (319) 200-3303 or visit 935 6th Ave, Marion, IA 52302 to book your session or learn more about adoption opportunities.
