About Café Chato
Café Chato, located in Verdun, Quebec, represents more than a simple café: it is a sanctuary merging feline companionship with community wellness through "ronronthérapie"—purr therapy. Operating in exclusive partnership with Refuge Animex, Café Chato offers adoptable cats awaiting families a warm, secure environment where they can thrive while visitors discover a unique space for relaxation, work, and connection. The café's 100% vegetarian menu reflects a holistic commitment to animal care that extends beyond the resident cats; every purchase directly supports feline welfare and rescue efforts. With rotating residents averaging 10 cats at any given time, each visit offers fresh discovery and the genuine possibility of meeting a future family member.
The café prioritizes cat wellbeing through clear, thoughtfully enforced guidelines that create a peaceful environment for both animals and guests. House rules are specific and respectful: visitors are asked to read cat body language and allow cats to initiate interaction, never pick up or restrain cats, avoid the reserved back area where cats rest undisturbed, and maintain appropriate volume. This structure ensures cats remain calm, socialized, and comfortable—not overwhelmed by human interaction. The space itself is clean, inviting, and designed for multiple uses: freelancers and students benefit from free WiFi and ample electrical outlets, casual visitors enjoy board games and quiet reading nooks, and everyone experiences the soothing presence of adaptable feline companions. Reviewers praise the staff's attentiveness to both cat welfare and guest comfort, the high-quality food (especially iced matcha lattes and creative coffee preparations), and the overall welcoming atmosphere. Children are welcome with proper supervision and explanation of café rules, ensuring families can share the experience responsibly.
Operating Monday–Friday 8am–7pm and Saturday–Sunday 9am–5pm, Café Chato operates on a first-come, first-served basis with no reservations (though the space can be privatized outside operating hours for private events). The 100% vegetarian menu features homemade options with vegan and gluten-free choices available; reviewers highlight excellent coffee drinks (particularly lattes and matcha preparations with house-made syrups), fresh food, and thoughtful flavor combinations. Adoption is managed through Refuge Animex via their online application process; interested adopters should submit applications early as wait times can extend up to 4 weeks and cats cannot be reserved before approval. All Refuge Animex animals are spayed/neutered. Contact Café Chato at coopchato@gmail.com or 514-768-5555 for event inquiries and café details. Located at 4833 Rue de Verdun, Verdun, QC H4G 1N2, Café Chato invites you to experience the magic of feline connection and community.
