Located in Whitewater, Wisconsin, BaristaCats Café & Sanctuary for Wayward Cats was inspired by founder Natalie Serna's visits to cat cafes across England in August 2021, particularly Cat Café in Liverpool and Coffee Cats in Lincoln. Upon returning to Wisconsin, Serna realized the state had only two cat cafes and committed to opening a third. The mission is straightforward: create a comfortable environment where the community can destress and relax with coffee and cats while facilitating adoptions. Since opening in February 2023, BaristaCats has rehomed over 216 cats through partnerships with multiple rescues across the globe, demonstrating a genuine commitment to finding forever homes rather than simply operating as a cafe with incidental cats.
The space is deliberately limited to 10 visitors at a time to ensure happiness of both cats and guests. Children 10 and under are not permitted in the Pawlor (cat lounge), while ages 11-17 require adult supervision. The cafe intentionally does not offer a full menu, focusing more on rescue operations; instead, visitors enjoy prepackaged, grab-and-go snacks (vegan, keto, and gluten-friendly options) alongside signature blend coffee from
Lake Geneva Coffee Roastery, Harney & Sons premium teas, and imported Cadbury hot drinking chocolate from England. General admission is $14 per hour ($11 with online booking on Fridays), while special rates include $6 all-day access for students with valid ID and free admission for first-line workers with valid ID. The space hosts recurring events including Movie Night with Cats (3rd Friday at 6pm) and Paws & Painting (2nd Saturday at 6pm).
Reviewers consistently praise the thoughtfully designed space that allows cats' personalities to shine in a comfortable home-like environment—quite different from traditional shelter settings. One visitor noted adopting two cats after coming in hoping to adopt one, describing the experience as free from the guilt of "not taking every single cat home." Multiple reviews highlight the owner's visible kindness and dedication to finding every cat a home, with visitors noticing the cats' obvious happiness and playfulness. The model of charging admission to directly support rescue operations demonstrates transparency and compassion, with reviewers expressing belief that "there should absolutely be more cafes like this" and emphasizing the importance of adopting rather than shopping for cats.
